Our Story

ilus, pronounced “ē-loos”, means beautiful in Estonia. ilus brings you cellular biotech art! At ilus, we discovered art in the laboratory…in the beautiful images of human cells that reflect life at the microscopic level. We find beauty in an unseen world. We hope that this art is able to catch your eye and touch your heart. We think this artwork creates an opportunity to start conversations in your home, office, or school about science. S.D. Airport Display

The Airport Authority's Art Program invited Biocom to coordinate an art installation representing the San Diego life science industry. Ilus congratulates both the Airport Authority and Biocom for its shared vision of showcasing the beautiful pictures found at life science companies in Southern California.

Our Process

To create the images, cells are first grown on glass coverslips and chemically fixed to preserve the structure and appearance of the cells. Visualization and image capture of the fluorescent probes is accomplished using a digital camera attached to a microscope. This microscope is equipped with an ultraviolet light source and filters to reveal the location and intensity of the probes bound to their associated molecules and structures within the cell.
